Meeting of NGOS with the United Nations high commissioner for Human Rights

Geneva, 9 March 2018

The Association Miraisme International attended a Meeting of NGOs with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on March 9, 2018. Particular attention has been given to this meeting because the term of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, ends this summer.

At the beginning of the meeting, the High Commissioner made a short opening statement in which he spoke about the importance of NGOs and their role as a main leverage between governments and civil societies. Mr. Al Hussein also pointed out that the cooperation of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights with civil society remains a strategic priority for the work of the Office. The most of the meeting time was dedicated to answering the questions raised by the present NGOs to the High Commissioner. The most frequent questions were related to the possibility of visiting some regions, various reports and investigations, ways the office can support civil societies on the ground in certain areas, as well as voicing ideas and suggestions to the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The current Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kate Gilmore, also participated in the discussion answering for some questions, and together with others thanked Mr. Al Hussein for his work as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights since September 2014.

Note: The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is a United Nations agency that works for the protection and promotion of all human rights for all people by representing the world's commitment to universal ideals of human dignity.
